Midwifery. Community. Care.

get back to the root.

The ROOT is a space for midwifery and the shared wisdom that's inspired by women gathering. It’s home to four San Francisco midwives who choose to weave their individual and dynamic practices into collaborative space. Our mission is to create opportunity for women to connect, normalize, re-wild and initiate the blueprint of birth, and to feel the collective power and grace of an ever expanding community. Get to the ROOT of it all: beauty, birth, and love.

Meet the rooted midwives...

KARA ENGELBRECHT, CPM LM

Mothercraft Midwifery

Kara’s path into midwifery started with a tattered copy of Spiritual Midwifery that she inherited in her first pregnancy. As a new mother of two young children she continued to collect volumes of birth stories and stacks of text books which led her down the road to midwifery. Blending practicality and passion, midwifery allows for her care to be curated to the individual needs of each woman. Kara now has two teens and a lovely homebirth practice full of new and repeat families. Through years of holding birth, Kara has amounted a wealth of trust and love for women and babies, and their ability to birth.

Kelly Murphy, CPM LM

Women Born

Kelly’s practice was created to honor women: their bodies, spirits, choices, and capacity for profound transformation. She believes Birth is one of life’s greatest teachers, and that undisturbed birth does its most penetrating work. Kelly believes women know best how to grow and birth their babies, and that midwifery care helps access that knowledge and protect the sanctity and safety of birth. She reveres midwifery as invitation to community connection and celebration of life’s exquisite moments. It’s among her greatest pleasures to witness the birth of babies, mothers, and families.
