Midwifery. Community. Care.

get back to the root.

The ROOT is a space for midwifery and the wisdoms stirred when women gather. It was founded in 2015 by four San Francisco midwives as a place to belong, cultivate community and galvanize acts of human self care. Our mission is to normalize, re-wild and initiate the blueprint of midwifery as touchstone to our collective power and connection.

Meet the rooted midwives...

Mothercraft Midwifery

Kara’s path into midwifery started with a tattered copy of Spiritual Midwifery that she inherited in her first pregnancy. As a new mother of two young children she continued to collect volumes of birth stories and stacks of text books which led her down the road to midwifery. Blending practicality and passion, midwifery allows for her care to be curated to the individual needs of each woman. Kara now has two teens and a lovely homebirth practice full of new and repeat families. Through years of holding birth, Kara has amounted a wealth of trust and love for women and babies, and their ability to birth.

Mama Lion Midwifery

At Nile's practice, Mama Lion Midwifery, we believe that women and babies are wise beyond our understanding. Basing care on the intuitions of women blended with the science of midwifery Mama Lion strives to empower women and their families to make the safest and smartest choices for themselves as individuals. With her training in both hospital and homebirth models of care, Nile holds the space of evidence-based information and experiential care. Having been born at home herself, Nile understands on a deep level the importance of compassion, patience, intelligence, power, and mystery in birth.

Kelly Murphy, CPM LM

Women Born

Kelly’s practice was created to honor women: their bodies, spirits, choices, and capacity for profound transformation. She believes Birth is one of life’s greatest teachers, and that undisturbed birth does its most penetrating work. Kelly believes women know best how to grow and birth their babies, and that midwifery care helps access that knowledge and protect the sanctity and safety of birth. She reveres midwifery as invitation to community connection and celebration of life’s exquisite moments. It’s among her greatest pleasures to witness the birth of babies, mothers, and families.

Jamie shapiro, CPM LM

Peaceful Passage Midwifery

Years of self-healing through many holistic traditions led Jaime to her path as a Midwife. She works with women throughout their lives, helping support healthy cycles, optimal fertility, strong pregnancies, births, and postpartums. Jaime never ceases to be amazed by the immense power and wisdom of the body and is honored over and over again to safeguard and bear witness to women's process. She believes that the care of a midwife honors and nurtures the whole woman - body, mind, and soul. Additionally, Jaime is a practitioner of the arvigo techniques of maya abdominal therapy™ and incorporates reiki healing.
